Remembering the Legends


18th edition of International Film Festival of Kerala paid tribute to the legends of Malayalam Cinema who left us in the past year. Special function was held at Hotel Hycinth for the release of ‘Shredanjali Series’ books, published by Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, on astonishing actor Sukumari, brilliance of art direction S Konnanatu and musical maestro K Raghavan. The function was attended by Chalachitra Academy Chairman Priyadarshan, directors T. K. Rajeev Kumar, Nemom Pushparaj, Ashok R Nath, Suresh Unnithan and lyricists Bichu Thirumala and Poovachal Khader.
T. K. Rajeev Kumar briefed that the ‘Shredanjali Series’ of books are the guide to these four and many other legends for the generations to come.
Remembering Sukumari, Bichu Thirumala said that she was one of the most talented actor who conquered the world of cinema with her performances and was a mother figure for all the youngsters in the field. “I consider it as my privilege to be related with Sukumari”, he added.
While Suresh Unnithan, director of ‘Ayal’, the film in the homage section of Sukumari, said that she was most happy to work in the film even though it was not a big role. “But Sukumari Amma amazed us with what she had in the film”, he added. Unnithan expressed that passing away of the actor is an great loose for the whole Malayalam film industry.
“Raghavan Master was the figure of music in my mind from the time I began to listen to music”, expressed Poovachal Khader. He opined that Master was known to every common man even at the time when there were on visual media and this suggests that how much society was influenced by him. Khadar also suggested that the hand written copies of master’s musical notes should be archived.
On tracing the memories about S. Konnanatu, Nemom Pushparaj said that he was nothing less than a magician who created wonders on the set, even without the assistance of technological advancements. Konnanatu was owner of a wonderful personality who was most friendly to any one on the sets, he remembered. Legendary music director, V. Dakshinamoorthy was also remembered at the function.
Book on Sukumari, by MS Dilip, was released by Academy Chairman Priyadarshan by handing over the first copy to director Ashok R Nath. Kanesh Punnor’s book on S. Konnanatu was released by TK T. K. Rajeev Kumar. The first copy was received by Nemom Pushparaj. Book on K Raghavan master, by Dr. MD Manoj, was released by Bichu Thirumala and the first copy was received by Poovachal Khader.
