Perunna Subramanyaswami Temple

The Subramanya Swami Temple at Perunna, Changanacherry is at a distance of 20 km from Kottayam. This ancient temple, built in 753 A.D, is under the administration of ‘Urazhma’ Devaswam Board. It was among the first temples to open its doors to all groups of people. The idol of the presiding deity Lord Subramanian is almost six feet in height and the ‘Vel’ hold by the lord is pointed downwards. The annual 10 day long festival, “ULSAVAM” is celebrated during November – December (Vrischikam). Kodiyettu (flag hoisting) is on Karthigai and Karthigai Vilakku is celeberated on the same day. Chakiarkooth is the main ritual performed during the festival.

Perunna Muruga Temple is the place where a Very Ugra Bhava of Lord Subrahmanya is worshipped.The idol of Lord Muruga of this temple unique. There is a specialty in this idol, comparing with other idols in temples. The Vel which the Lord is holding is pointed downwards. Muruga is worshipped here in the bhava of “devasenapathi” and he is in a very angry mood as he had just killed ‘Tharakasura”.
