Kamala Surayya was a unique genius in the Malayalam literature. She was born in 1934 at Punnayoorkulam in Trissur district. Her father was V.M.Nair and mother Naalappaat Balaamaniyamma. Her original name was Madhavikutty. Her most famous creations in Malayalam were, Balyakala Smaranakal, Ente Katha, Mathilukal, Madhavikuttiyute Thiranjetutha Kathakal, Neermathalam Pootha Kaalam and Nashttapetta Neelaambari.
Other than this, she has written several books in English too. Her personal feelings and sentiments could be seen in most of her creations. She has dared to write openly and honestly about the sexual needs and behavior of women, in her books. She deserves a distinction for her courage to write so openly. No other woman in India has dared to do this before.
Apart from Stories and Poems the write ups about her bitter and sometimes sweet personal experiences and memories have won her accolades from far and wide. She breathed her last at Pune on 31st May 2009. The Malayalam Literature could never ever forget her.
