Changanacherry is ideally known as the gateway to high range and kuttanadu. It is a municipal town in Kottayam district. The location of Changanacherry is such that it is placed between Thiruvananthapuram and Cochin. It was a major trading hub during old times and its name is debatably linked to trading activities. Changanachery has an area of 13.50 sq. kmtrs. Transportation is very well developed in Changanacherry with road, rail and inland waterways contributing for transport modes. Thiruvazhappally Sree Mahadeva Temple at Changanasseri occupies a unique position among the Kerala Hindu Shrines. This Holy Shrine is a major temple under the administration of the Travancore Devaswom Board. This temple situates 900 m west of Mathumoola Junction and 1.5 km north of the Town. The main idol of lord Mahadeva faces East, while Dakshinamoorthi & Ganapathy faces south and Lordess Parvathi faces west in the same Vatta (circular) Sreekovil, Besides separate shrines for Maha Ganapathi, Saastha and Bhramma Rakshas. The other deities installed in this temple are Nagaraja, Naga yakshi and Nandikeswar. The presence of Lord Subramanyan and Lord Parasurama also seen in the temple. So the whole shrine belongs to one family –Lord the Siva’s. Lord Ganapathy is the God of wisdom and remover of all obstacles. According to Sankalpa of the temple, Ganapathi Vigraha is in the form of Maha Ganapathi. This is one of the rarest temple, where Mahaganapathi faces south with separate dwaja–sthambam (Flag Staff). Perunna Subramanyaswami Temple

The Subramanya Swami Temple at Perunna, Changanacherry is at a distance of 20 km from Kottayam. This ancient temple, built in 753 A.D, is under the administration of ‘Urazhma’ Devaswam Board. It was among the first temples to open its doors to all groups of people. The idol of the presiding deity Lord Subramanian is almost six feet in height and the ‘Vel’ hold by the lord is pointed downwards. The annual 10 day long festival, “ULSAVAM” is celebrated during November – December (Vrischikam). Kodiyettu (flag hoisting) is on Karthigai and Karthigai Vilakku is celeberated on the same day. Chakiarkooth is the main ritual performed during the festival.

Perunna Muruga Temple is the place where a Very Ugra Bhava of Lord Subrahmanya is worshipped.The idol of Lord Muruga of this temple unique. There is a specialty in this idol, comparing with other idols in temples. The Vel which the Lord is holding is pointed downwards. Muruga is worshipped here in the bhava of “devasenapathi” and he is in a very angry mood as he had just killed ‘Tharakasura”.

Pazhayapalli

The Pazhaya palli is said to be more than 1000 years old and one of the most famous mosque in Central Travancore. The annual festival, Thangal adiyanthiram, is famous and is marked by a grand community feast. Meat and two tonnes of rice, offered by the devotees, is used to prepare biriyani for the community feast on this day. The Chandanakuddam festival at the mosque is one of the largest crowd pulling events in Changanacherry town.

Nair Service Society Headquarters

The Nair Service Society or the NSS as it is popularly known in Kerala has its headquarters in Perunna, Changanacherry. NSS is a social organization established in 1914 which has made remarkable contributions in the fields of education, medicine and agriculture. The Society was started by Mannathu Padmanabhan on 31 October 1914. The NSS is a three tier organisation with Karayogams at the base level, Taluk Unions at the intermediate level and the Headquarters at the apex level. The Society owns and manages a large number of educational institutions and hospitals.

The architecture of the church is European-inspired with Portuguese and Spanish themes. Inside, the high ceilings are supported on huge columns. The main altar features exquisite craftsmanship of wood carving of statues and crosses. The domed ceiling is adorned with fresco paintings. There are no pews in the church: worshippers squat on the floor. As is customary in many Kerala churches, they are separated by gender: men sit up front while women occupy the rear section. A new semi-circular section was added to the rear of the building in the 60s to accommodate a growing congregation. Outside, at the head of the building, stands the tallest structure in the town, namely, the bell tower. The ringing of the bell can be heard throughout the city.

Syro-Malabar Catholic Archdiocese of Changanassery
Archdiocese of Changanassery is the largest Catholic Diocese in India and its recognition as the same has a history which starts from the year of 1887. The Archdiocese of Changanacherry is one of the first two Vicariates and the second Metropolitan Archdiocese of the Syro-Malabar Church, after the establishment of the Syro-Malabar hierarchy which was the prelude to the restoration of the identity of the Church in 1992 as Sui luris Church. The Archdiocese of Changanacherry now comprises the civil districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Kottayam in Kerala and Palai, Kanjirapally and Thucklay as its suffragans. Archbishop Mar Joseph Powathil assumed the office of the Archbishop of Changanacherry on 17th January 1986 and resigned in 2007. Mar Joseph Perumthottam was appointed on 20th January 2007 as the new Metropolitan Archbishop of Changanacherry and was installed on 19th March 2007.
