Bharathan


Bharathan Born 14 November 1947 – Died 30 July 1998)

Bharathan was a renowned Malayalam Film director. His birth place is Vadakkancherry in Trissur district. He was a film personality who has gifted number of movies to the Keralits. Noted drama-cine actress KPSC Lalitha is his wife. His only son Sidharth is both a cinema director and an actor.

Bharathan entered the Malayalam cinema as an art director after gaining his diploma from school of fine arts. His debut was in the movie ‘Gandarva Kshethram’ directed by Vincent. After working in few films as art director and associate director he became an independent director by directing the film ‘Prayanam’ in 1974, with the script written by Padmarajan.

In the first movie ‘Prayanam’ he has proved his ability to shoot sexual scenes without letting it glide towards vulgarity. Latter on this method came to be known as the ‘Bharathan Touch’. Prior to Padmarajan turning to be an independent director, they together produced number of good films. Notable among those were ‘Rethinirvedam’ and ‘Thakara’.

At the beginning of eighties Bharathan produced some twin films, viz.. ‘Chamaram’, ‘Marmaram’, ‘Palangal’, ‘Ente Upasana’ are some of them. His movie ‘Vysali’ is an example of the art piece astounded the artist. Vysali is considered as Bharathan’s master piece.

Bharathan has also authored many screen plays and songs. He has also composed music for his films. The song ‘Tharam Valkannadi Nokki’ of the film ‘Keli’ done in raga ‘Hindola’ is an example for his expertise in music. He has also associated himself with famous music composer Ouseppachen for the movie ‘Kathodu Kathoram’.

He has received the following National awards:

1975 – National award for best Malayalam movie – Prayanam
1992 – National award for the best movie in Tamil – Thevar Makan.
