April Fool

April Fool, is a socio – fantasy, absurd comedy. The film stars Jagapathi Babu and Bhumika in an important roles. Gulshan Grover and Ranadhir are playing two other important characters. The movie is described by producer Seema Azaruddin as an absurd comedy-cum -socio fantasy. “The story revolves around five characters. Gulshan Grover is playing the role of a land-grabber. Jagapathi Babu plays a honest lawyer Prakash and Bhumika Chawla plays a journalist Swapna
Ranadhir (Happy Days fame) and Srushti are playing the other couple,” the director says. Krishnaswamy Srikanth Iyyengar, a documentary film maker, is turning a director with this one.

Kaki (Ranadhir) is a good for nothing guy who makes a living by renting out a vintage car and a horse for weddings. He earns the wrath of the local goon,Anna (Gulshan Grover), when a cache of diamonds finds its way into his car due to a quirk of fate. Can he stand up against the might of Anna? He finds unlikely help in the form of an honest lawyer rakash(Jagapathi Babu) and a journalist Swapna.

The film, we were told, was going to be an absurd comedy. It’s only half true…the absurd part that is. It’s such a random story that it seems like everything just happens for no rhyme or reason, making it hard to make sense of the proceedings. Absolute nonsense will be more like it.

Kaki is a dimwitted underdog who is the butt of ridicule for being born on April fool’s day. On one birthday, he looses it when his friends wish him happy fools day instead of the perfunctory birthday wishes. Leaving the party in a huff, he returns to his dingy room and cries his heart out to the gods. For some strange reason, the guy just seems to be living the same day over and over again through most of the first half of the film.

In the second half, the filmmaker seeks to connect the dots. We are introduced to Prakash (Jagapathi Babu), an honest lawyer who is always courting trouble for his honest ways. Swapna (Bhumika), a forthright TV journalist happens to be Ranadhir’s love interest, but she wants to get hitched to the non-committal Prakash.

Meanwhile, a local goon, Anna, is given the job of evacuating the slum where Kaki resides. It turns out that Kaki becomes a targeted man when some stolen diamonds find their way into his car.

Don’t be fooled by the posters of the film which are designed to give you a false impression that Bhumika Chawla and Jagapathi Babu
are playing the lead roles in this movie. They just play extended cameos in it, that’s all. The protagonist of the movie is Ranadhir, and it’s something you realize about 15 minutes into the movie. Calling this attempt a movie would be an overstatement, it’s more like an amateur home video gone terribly wrong.

The characters are so ill-conceived that no amount of acting could weave some sense into the proceedings. As a result, the performances look plain stupid, be it Ranadhir, Bhumika or Jagapathi Babu. The stupidity spills over on to everything else in the movie. We’ll leave it at that.
