Kottiyoor Shiva Temple


Kottiyoor Shiva temple is situated on the beautiful Sahya mountain range valley and is blessed with abundant natural beauty. It is a famous pilgrim center in Kerala devoted to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The full name of the temple is Kottiyoor Mahadeva Kshethram . This temple is also known as the Dakshina Kashi or Varanasi of the South.

According to the Sthala Purana, it is supposed to be the location of the famous Yagna of Daksha, also called the Daksha Yagna or the Dakshayaagam. The Bavali river with her medicinal waters flow from the Wayanad Ghats on the banks of the temple. The festival season is the second longest season festival in Kerala. It will be 28 days. The 28 days long annual festival here commences on the Chothi asterism in the Malayalam month of Edavam (May-June) and culminates on the Chithira asterism of the Mithunam month (June- July)The festival will be in rainy season and it attracts lakh of devotees every year during this festival time
